Quick Tip
Use he for one male person or animal.
Use she for one female person or animal.
Use they for more than one person or animal.
When gender is not known or not mentioned, using they for one person is also fine!
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes

Use picture cards showing clearly male, female, and group subjects. Students point to the picture, say the noun, then say the pronoun — the pairing builds automaticity before the written task.

Vocabulary
Pronoun: Word that replaces a noun.
Noun: A word for a person, place, thing, or idea.
Common Mistakes
  • Using they for a single clearly-gendered person
  • Using he for a female noun or she for a male noun
  • Forgetting to change the verb when switching from plural noun to they
Differentiation
SupportProvide a 3-card reference (he / she / they) with a picture example on each.
ChallengeWrite two sentences: one using the noun, one replacing it with the pronoun.
Discussion Questions
  • When would you use they for just one person?
  • How do you figure out whether to use he or she?
Extension Activities
  • Read a picture book page and have students substitute pronouns for all character names.
  • Pronoun relay race: teacher reads noun, student team calls out the pronoun before the other team.
Parent Tip

Point to a person or group. Ask your child to say 'he,' 'she,' or 'they.'
