Quick Tip
Use I when the pronoun is the subject — the one doing the action.
Use me when the pronoun is the object — the one receiving the action or coming after a preposition.
Tip: Remove the other person's name and try each alone — trust your ear!

Teaching Notes

Teach the remove-the-extra-person trick: in 'Tom and I went to the store', remove Tom — 'I went to the store' sounds right; 'Me went to the store' sounds wrong. This self-checking strategy works reliably at Grade 1.

Vocabulary
Subject Pronoun: Pronoun that performs the action of the verb.
Object Pronoun: Pronoun that receives the action of the verb.
Common Mistakes
  • Using me as the subject: Me and Tom went...
  • Using I after a preposition: She gave it to I
  • Reversing the rule in compound phrases: Tom and me ran instead of Tom and I ran
Differentiation
SupportHave students read the sentence aloud with both options and circle the one that sounds correct.
ChallengeWrite an original sentence for each pronoun and explain why they chose it.
Discussion Questions
  • Why does Me went to school sound wrong but She gave it to me sound right?
  • What trick can you use when you are not sure which to pick?
Extension Activities
  • Proofread a short paragraph that has 4 deliberate I/me errors; correct them.
  • Play I or Me? ball toss — teacher says a sentence stem, student catches ball and calls out the pronoun.
Parent Tip

Say 'Me like cookies.' Then say 'I like cookies.' Ask which sounds right.
