Quick Tip
After a preposition (between, for, with, to, by, after…) always use an object pronoun: me, you, him, her, it, us, them
between you and I  ·  ✓ between you and me
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes

Hypercorrection ('between you and I') is extremely common, even among educated adults. Teach the 'remove-one-person' trick so students can test by ear. Explain that 'I' after a preposition always sounds wrong when the other person is removed.

Vocabulary
preposition: A word showing relation (e.g., to, for, with, on).
pronoun case: Form of a pronoun based on its job in a sentence.
Common Mistakes
  • Using subject pronouns after prepositions (between you and I)
  • Forgetting to apply the test when a second person is added (e.g., 'for him and she')
  • Thinking 'me' is always informal or incorrect
Differentiation
SupportHighlight the preposition in every question before choosing the pronoun.
ChallengeWrite 4 sentences containing a preposition + two pronouns and verify each.
Discussion Questions
  • Why do you think so many people say 'between you and I' if it is incorrect?
  • What trick helps you decide which pronoun to use after a preposition?

  • Listen to 2 minutes of TV news and tally subject vs. object pronouns after prepositions.
