Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes
Drill the he/him test until automatic. Write it on a classroom poster. Work through 5 examples together before independent practice. Note that 'whom' is more common in formal writing; 'who' is common in informal speech.
Vocabulary
who: Used as the subject of a verb.
whom: Used as the object of a verb or preposition.
Common Mistakes
- Using 'who' for all cases because 'whom' sounds formal
- Forgetting to mentally rearrange relative clauses before applying the test
- Applying the test incorrectly to inverted word order questions
Differentiation
SupportPrint the he/him test as a step-by-step card the student works through for each item.
ChallengeWrite 4 sentences each using who and whom, one in a question and one in a clause.
Discussion Questions
- Why does 'whom' sometimes sound strange in everyday speech even when it is technically correct?
- How do you rearrange 'To whom did you speak?' to apply the substitution test?
Extension Activities
- Find 3 who/whom sentences in a newspaper article and verify each.
- Rewrite 4 who sentences using whom (when possible) and discuss any meaning change.
Parent Tip
Practice by asking 'Who is there?' and 'Whom did you see?'
