Teaching Notes
Post the three-group classification on an anchor chart. The always-singular group is longest and most counterintuitive ('everyone are' sounds correct to some students). Drills on 'everyone/somebody/nobody + singular verb' are most valuable.
Vocabulary
Indefinite Pronoun: Pronoun that refers to a non-specific person, place, or thing.
Subject-Verb Agreement: Subject and verb must match in number (singular or plural).
Common Mistakes
- Treating 'everyone' and 'everybody' as plural because they feel collective
- Forgetting that 'none' can be singular or plural depending on context
- Using plural verbs with 'neither' and 'either'
Differentiation
SupportProvide a colour-coded reference card: green = always singular, blue = always plural, yellow = check context.
ChallengeWrite 6 original sentences using indefinite pronoun subjects from all three categories.
Discussion Questions
- Why might a native speaker say 'everyone are coming' even though it is grammatically incorrect?
- How do you decide whether 'most' takes a singular or plural verb?
Extension Activities
- Audit a paragraph from a published book for indefinite pronoun + verb combinations.
- Rewrite 4 sentences swapping singular indefinite pronouns for plural ones and adjust verbs accordingly.
Parent Tip
Ask your child to find sentences with indefinite pronouns and check if the verbs agree.
