Common Mistakes
  • Choosing a striking statistic as the main idea instead of the central claim
  • Identifying the introduction sentence rather than the overall argument as the main idea
  • For GR5-6: missing that the main idea spans all paragraphs, not just the first one
Differentiation
SupportAfter reading, give students 3 candidate main idea sentences and have them highlight evidence in the passage that matches each before choosing.
ChallengeAsk students to identify which supporting detail is strongest and explain why in writing.
Discussion Questions
  • Why do you think the author chose THIS particular fact or aspect to focus the whole passage on?
  • Which supporting detail was most convincing β€” and which was just interesting background?
  • How would this passage read differently if the main idea were about a different aspect of the same topic?
Extension Activities
  • Find a news article or science magazine article on the same topic and identify its main idea.
  • Create a fact pyramid: main idea at the top, most important supporting detail below, additional details at the base.
