Teaching Notes
Connect to science and social studies prior knowledge — students often know how to USE something but not how it works. Use a purpose-and-mechanism frame: What problem does this solve? How does it solve it? The main idea for process texts is usually the PURPOSE, not a description of individual parts.
Vocabulary
Main Idea: What the text is mostly about.
Detail: A specific piece of information from the text.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing one step in the process as the main idea instead of the overall purpose
- Treating all details as equally important without identifying which the passage is built around
- Confusing background context with a supporting detail
Differentiation
SupportPre-teach 2-3 key vocabulary words and provide a labeled diagram of the subject to reference while reading.
ChallengeHave students write a paragraph explaining how a different technology works, with a clear main idea sentence.
Discussion Questions
- What problem does this invention or system solve?
- Which detail surprised you most — and does it support the main idea or is it extra information?
- If you had to explain how this works in one sentence to a younger student, what would you say?
Extension Activities
- Draw a labeled diagram of the subject and write one sentence per part explaining its role.
- Research a related invention and compare its purpose to the one in the passage.
- Write a how-it-works paragraph about something you use every day, with a clear main idea.
Parent Tip
Ask your child to tell you the main idea of a book they are reading.
