Teaching Notes
Pet and animal friendship stories are ideal for Grade 1 students β short texts, familiar topics, and strong emotional hooks. Focus comprehension discussion on the relationship between the child and the animal: What did the pet do? How did the child feel? These stories also build empathy and perspective-taking. Pair with a class share: Has your pet ever done something surprising?
Vocabulary
Pet: An animal kept for companionship.
Friendship: A relationship between people or animals.
Loyal: Faithful and true.
Common Mistakes
- Answering what they think the pet would do instead of what the story says the pet did β redirect to the text
- Writing incomplete sentences β Grade 1 students may answer in fragments; model full sentences before they write
Differentiation
SupportComplete the first question together as a class, modelling how to go back to the story to find the answer.
ChallengeWrite two sentences describing what the pet might do in a new situation β e.g. what would Biscuit do if he met another dog at the park?
Discussion Questions
- What did the pet do in the story that surprised you the most?
- Do you think the child in the story was a good pet owner? Why?
- If you had a pet like the one in the story, what would you name it and why?
Extension Activities
- Draw the pet from the story and write one sentence about it
- Write 3 rules for being a good pet owner
- Tell a partner about a real animal you have met that was funny or surprising
Parent Tip
Talk about a time a pet was a good friend.
