Teaching Notes

Pet and animal friendship stories are ideal for Grade 1 students — short texts, familiar topics, and strong emotional hooks. Focus comprehension discussion on the relationship between the child and the animal: What did the pet do? How did the child feel? These stories also build empathy and perspective-taking. Pair with a class share: Has your pet ever done something surprising?

Vocabulary

Pet: An animal kept for companionship.

Friendship: A relationship between people or animals.

Loyal: Faithful and true.

Common Mistakes

• Answering what they think the pet would do instead of what the story says the pet did — redirect to the text
• Writing incomplete sentences — Grade 1 students may answer in fragments; model full sentences before they write
