Teaching Notes
Dinosaur stories combine imagination with real paleontology vocabulary. Before reading, ask what students already know about dinosaurs — this activates prior knowledge and creates curiosity gaps the story can fill. Watch for students who answer questions using outside knowledge rather than evidence from the text — redirect them to the passage.
Vocabulary
Dinosaur: An ancient reptile that lived millions of years ago.
Fossil: The remains of a plant or animal from long ago.
Prehistoric: Belonging to times before written history.
Common Mistakes
- Using outside dinosaur knowledge instead of text evidence — remind students their answer must come from the story
- Confusing dinosaur names or species details when multiple dinosaurs appear
Differentiation
SupportRead the passage aloud with expression, emphasising the action scenes. Let struggling readers follow along and then re-read on their own before answering.
ChallengeWrite a short newspaper article reporting the events of the story as if they were breaking news.
Discussion Questions
- If dinosaurs still existed today, how do you think the world would be different?
- What clues in the story told you how the main character felt about dinosaurs?
- Which part of the story felt most realistic to you? Which felt most like fantasy?
Extension Activities
- Draw and label the dinosaur from the story including 3 real facts about that species
- Write a diary entry from the perspective of the dinosaur
- Research: What do scientists think actually caused dinosaurs to go extinct?
Parent Tip
Talk about your favorite dinosaur and why.
