Quick Tip
Reflexive pronouns end in -self (singular) or -selves (plural).
Use them when the subject and object are the same person:
myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.
Match the pronoun to the subject: She fixed it herself.
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes

Have students build the reflexive form from the root pronoun: I → my → myself, he → him → himself. Note the two irregulars: ourselves and themselves (not ourself or theirself).

Vocabulary
Reflexive Pronoun: Refers back to the subject of the sentence.
Subject: The person or thing performing the action.
Common Mistakes
  • Using hisself or theirself (non-standard forms)
  • Confusing reflexive with intensive use
  • Using object pronoun instead of reflexive: She hurt her vs. She hurt herself
Differentiation
SupportProvide the subject pronoun underlined — student builds the -self form from it.
ChallengeDistinguish reflexive vs intensive use in sentences.
Discussion Questions
  • How is She hurt herself different from She hurt her?
  • Why is theirself not a standard word?
Extension Activities
  • Find 3 reflexive pronouns in a chapter book excerpt.
  • Write a short paragraph about something you did all by yourself using reflexive pronouns.
Parent Tip

Have your child talk about things they did themselves, using words like 'myself' or 'yourself'.
