Teaching Notes
Show side-by-side: 'That is her bag' (determiner before noun) vs. 'That bag is hers' (pronoun alone). The two-column contrast on the board is the fastest way to lock in the distinction at Grade 2.
Vocabulary
Possessive Determiner: Shows ownership before a noun.
Possession: The state of owning something.
Common Mistakes
- Using the possessive pronoun (hers, his, theirs) before a noun
- Confusing its (possessive) with it's (it is)
- Using their where they're is needed (addressed more fully in the homophones collection)
Differentiation
SupportAfter filling in the blank, student circles the noun that follows — confirming it is a determiner.
ChallengeConvert full sentences between the two forms: It is her book vs. The book is hers.
Discussion Questions
- What tells you to use a possessive determiner instead of a possessive pronoun?
- Why do we say its tail but not it's tail when talking about a cat?
Extension Activities
- Find 5 possessive determiners in a leveled reader and circle the noun that follows each.
