Adjective: comes before a noun → This book is mine.

Teaching Notes

The core test is whether a noun immediately follows the demonstrative word. Write pairs on the board: 'This is good' vs 'This soup is good' and ask students what the difference is in structure. Introduce the 'what?' test.

Vocabulary
demonstrative pronoun: Points to a specific noun (this, that, these, those).
demonstrative adjective: Modifies a noun (this book, that car).
Common Mistakes
  • Assuming all uses of this/that/these/those are pronouns
  • Confusing a demonstrative adjective with an article
  • Not recognising that the same word can have different grammatical roles
Differentiation
SupportGive a sentence-frame grid: 'Pronoun = stands alone | Adjective = + noun' and ask students to circle which pattern they see.
ChallengeWrite two sentences for each of the four demonstratives — one pronoun use, one adjective use.
Discussion Questions
  • How does meaning change when 'those' is a pronoun vs an adjective?
  • What clue in the sentence tells you which role the word is playing?
Extension Activities
  • Find 5 uses of 'this' or 'that' in a reading passage and label each P or A.
  • Turn 4 demonstrative pronoun sentences into demonstrative adjective sentences by adding nouns.
Parent Tip

Point to objects and ask 'What is this?' or 'What is that?'
