Teaching Notes

Vocabulary
interrogative pronoun: A pronoun used to ask questions.
question word: Words like who, what, which, whom, whose used to ask questions.
Common Mistakes
  • Using 'who' where 'whom' is required as object
  • Confusing 'what' and 'which' — explain that 'which' implies a limited set of options
  • Using 'whose' and 'who's' interchangeably (whose = ownership, who's = who is)
Differentiation
SupportProvide a question-type guide card: Who/Whom = person, What = thing, Which = choice, Whose = owner.
ChallengeWrite two original questions using each of the five pronouns.
Discussion Questions
  • When would you use 'which' instead of 'what' in a question?
  • How can you tell whether to use 'who' or 'whom'?
Extension Activities
  • Sort 10 given questions by which interrogative pronoun they use.
  • Rewrite 3 'who' sentences as 'whom' sentences and explain the difference.
Parent Tip

Ask your child questions using 'who,' 'what,' 'which,' 'whom,' and 'whose' throughout the day.
