Teaching Notes
Use the sentence position test: if the pronoun comes before the verb and drives the sentence, it is subject; if it comes after the verb or a preposition, it is object. Practise this by swapping answers in and checking which sounds right.
Vocabulary
Subject Pronoun: Acts as the subject of a sentence.
Object Pronoun: Acts as the object of a verb or preposition.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing I in object position (Give it to I)
- Choosing me in subject position (Me and Tom went...)
- Being confused by compound phrases (she and I vs. her and me)
Differentiation
SupportUnderline the verb first, then ask: does the pronoun come before or after it?
ChallengeRewrite the sentence swapping subject and object positions and adjust pronouns accordingly.
Discussion Questions
- Why does She and I went sound right but Her and me went sounds wrong?
- What position in a sentence tells you to use an object pronoun?
Extension Activities
- Each student writes two sentences — one using a subject pronoun, one using an object pronoun — and swaps with a partner to check.
- Pronoun choice game: show sentence on board, two teams race to give the correct pronoun.
