Two negatives cancel each other out in formal English. Replace one negative with its positive counterpart: nothing→anything, nobody→anybody, never→ever.

Vocabulary
Double negative: Using two negative words in one sentence.
Negative word: Words like 'no', 'not', 'never', 'nothing'.
Common Mistakes
  • Removing both negatives and making the sentence affirmative in the wrong way
  • Using "don't got no" → "don't got any" (forgetting to fix the verb too)
Extension Activities
  • Find double negatives in spoken language.
  • Rewrite sentences with positive words.
  • Practice using 'any' or 'anything'.
Parent Tip

Ask your child to say 'I don't have any' instead of 'I don't have none'.
