Teaching Notes

Creation stories are among the most universal genre of myth. Every culture has one. Use this as an opportunity to discuss cultural diversity and shared human questions (Where did we come from? Why are we here?). Treat all creation stories with equal respect β€” including Aboriginal Australian, Māori, Hindu, and Indigenous American traditions alongside Judeo-Christian ones.

Vocabulary
Creation Story: A myth explaining the origin of the world.
Origin: The beginning or source of something.
Cosmos: The universe.
Common Mistakes
  • Treating one creation story as 'true' and others as 'myths' β€” approach all with equal academic respect
  • Missing the values a creation story encodes (e.g., stewardship of nature, respect for elders)
  • Overlooking the role of creator figures as ongoing presences, not just origin stories
Differentiation
SupportUse a graphic organizer: Creator β†’ What was created β†’ How β†’ What it means for people.
ChallengeCompare two creation stories from different continents β€” what do they share? What is unique to each culture?
Discussion Questions
  • What questions about life do all creation stories try to answer?
  • How do creation stories reflect what a culture believes about their relationship to nature?
  • After reading multiple creation stories, what surprised you most about the similarities or differences?
Extension Activities
  • Write your own creation story for something in nature (e.g., why mountains exist, why the moon glows).
  • Find a creation story from your own cultural background or heritage and share it.
  • Create an illustrated timeline of events from one creation story you found most interesting.
Parent Tip

Ask your child how they think the world began.
