Teacher Resources
Vocabulary
Landform: A natural feature of Earth's surface, like a mountain, hill, or valley.
Water Body: A natural area of water, such as a river, lake, or ocean.
Peninsula: Land that sticks out into water, surrounded on three sides.
Island: Land that has water all the way around it.
Common Mistakes
  • Confusing lake (surrounded by land) with ocean (surrounds continents)
  • Mixing up hill and mountain (mountains are much taller)
  • Confusing bay and lake (bays are open to the ocean; lakes are enclosed)
Differentiation
SupportUse only 3 landforms with picture clues alongside each name
ChallengeAdd peninsula, bay, and waterfall; ask students to write their own description
Extension Activities
  • Draw and label your own landform scene with 4 landforms
  • Find 3 landforms on a real map and share them with the class
  • Build landforms with clay: mountain, valley, and river
Parent Tip

Point out landforms in real life — a local river, a hill you drive past, or lakes on a road-trip map. Real examples make the words stick!
