Quick Tip
The predicate is the part of a sentence that tells what the subject does or is. It is usually the main verb.
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes

Ask "What does the subject do or be?" The main verb is the simple predicate. Helping verbs (is, are, was, will) are not the simple predicate on their own.

Vocabulary
Predicate: What the subject does or is.
Verb: A word that shows action or state of being.
Common Mistakes
  • Writing the full verb phrase (e.g. "was flying") instead of the main verb ("flying")
  • Picking an adverb near the verb instead of the verb itself
Extension Activities
  • Act out the predicates.
  • Find verbs in action stories.
  • Draw pictures of the actions.
Parent Tip

Ask your child to name the action in sentences you read together.
