Teaching Notes
Do one full-class passage hunt first (project the passage, students call out adverbs while you highlight). Then release students to work independently on their worksheets. Pair-share answers to Q2 before reviewing as a class.
Vocabulary
Adverb: Word describing how, when, where, or to what extent an action happens.
Passage: A short section of written text.
Common Mistakes
- Underlining adjectives that describe nouns near a verb
- Missing "very" as a degree adverb
- Counting "very + adjective" as two adverbs separately (very is the adverb here)
Differentiation
SupportHighlight all verbs first, then search near each verb for a describing word.
ChallengeWrite a continuation of the passage using at least 4 adverbs from different categories.
Discussion Questions
- Which adverbs create the most vivid picture in your mind?
- How would the passage feel different without any adverbs?
Extension Activities
- Rewrite the passage removing ALL adverbs. Compare and discuss what is lost.
