Quick Tip
Read the clue, solve the word, and then decide whether its main pattern is closed, open, or magic-e.
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes
Link the syllable type to the vowel sound students hear, not just the letters they see.
Vocabulary
syllable: A word part with one vowel sound.
closed syllable: Ends in a consonant. Vowel is short.
vowel-consonant-e: Silent 'e' makes the vowel long.
Common Mistakes
- Memorizing category names without connecting them to sound
- Sorting based on word length instead of syllable pattern
Differentiation
SupportModel the target pattern orally first, then have students tap sounds or syllables before reading or writing.
ChallengeAsk students to say the full word, isolate the target chunk, and explain why it fits the pattern.
Discussion Questions
- What part of the word gives you the biggest clue?
- How do you know this word fits this pattern and not another one?
Extension Activities
- Ask students to explain why one sample word belongs in each category
Parent Tip
Say words and clap out the syllables together.
