Grade 6/Adverbs
Prepositional Phrases as Adverbs (1385)
A prepositional phrase can act like an adverb — modifying a verb, adjective, or another adverb rather than a noun. This printable worksheet for Grades 5–6 teaches students to underline the prepositional phrase, identify what it modifies, and classify it as adjective or adverb phrase.

Teaching Notes
Key test: "Can I move the phrase to another position without changing meaning?" Adverb phrases are more flexible. "She sat by the window" → "By the window, she sat." The adjective phrase "the girl by the window" cannot move: "By the window the girl waved" is ambiguous.
Vocabulary
Prepositional Phrase: A group of words starting with a preposition and ending with a noun.
Adverb Phrase: A phrase that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Common Mistakes
- Marking all prepositional phrases as adverb phrases
- Classifying by preposition type rather than what the phrase modifies
- Missing that the phrase immediately after a noun is almost always adjectival
Differentiation
SupportUnderline the noun it might describe AND the verb it might describe, then choose which connection is stronger.
ChallengeWrite one sentence where the same phrase acts as both — and explain how the meaning shifts.
