Teaching Notes

The semicolon rule trips up adults too. Drill it with a simple rule: "conjunctive adverb = big word, needs big punctuation (semicolon)." Contrast with FANBOYS conjunctions which use only a comma. After the worksheet, have students find one conjunctive adverb in a news article and check the punctuation.

Vocabulary
Conjunctive Adverb: A word that connects two independent clauses or sentences.
Punctuation: Marks like commas, periods, and semicolons.
Common Mistakes
  • "I was tired, however I finished." — missing semicolon, should be "; however,"
  • "I was tired; however I finished." — missing comma after "however"
  • Using "however" as an interrogative adverb ("However did you do that?") — different meaning entirely
  • Treating "then" as a conjunctive adverb requiring semicolon (it usually doesn't)
Differentiation
SupportFocus only on "however" and "therefore" — master these two before adding others.
ChallengeWrite a 5-sentence paragraph about a challenge you overcame. Include at least 2 conjunctive adverbs.
Discussion Questions
  • What is the difference between "but" and "however"? When would you choose one over the other?
  • Why do we use a semicolon before conjunctive adverbs but not before FANBOYS?
Extension Activities
  • Edit a paragraph written without conjunctive adverbs — add them where the logic demands.
  • Opinion paragraph: write 3 reasons for a position using "furthermore" and "moreover" to connect ideas.
Parent Tip

Help your child find connecting words in stories that show time or cause.
