Teaching Notes

Teach the four types with voice: flat tone (statement), rising (question), firm (command), high-pitched (exclamation). Students can "perform" each sentence to identify the type.

Vocabulary
Statement: Tells a fact or opinion.
Question: Asks for information.
Command: Tells someone to do something.
Exclamation: Shows strong feeling.
Common Mistakes
  • Calling an exclamation a statement just because it does not have a question mark
  • Confusing commands with statements when the subject is implied
Extension Activities
  • Write examples of each sentence type.
  • Identify sentence types in a story.
  • Change sentence types.
Parent Tip

Read sentences aloud with different tones to show sentence types.
