Story Punctuation — Commas and Endings (1423)

A short passage with all commas removed. Students read the mini-story and add commas in the correct positions — cementing their Grade 2 comma skills in the context of real connected writing. Seeing comma rules together in a passage is harder and more authentic than isolated sentences.

Quick Tip
Every sentence needs an ending mark — period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Also look for missing commas in: lists, Yes/No/Sure/Well openers, dates, and place names.

Teaching Notes

Before students begin, ask them to scan for "list words", "Yes/No/Sure/Well", dates, and city/state pairs — highlight each type before adding commas.

Vocabulary
comma: A punctuation mark separating items in a list.
ending punctuation: Marks like ., ?, or ! at the end of a sentence.
Common Mistakes
  • Missing the Yes/No opener comma because they focus only on lists
  • Oxford comma before "and" in lists
Differentiation
SupportColour-code: circle lists in blue, openers in green, dates/places in orange — then add the comma for each colour.
ChallengeWrite your own 3-sentence paragraph with two comma rules included.
Extension Activities
  • Write a short story.
  • Practice listing items.
  • Identify sentence endings.
Parent Tip

Read a short story together and point out all the punctuation marks.
