Teaching Notes

Teach the Cookie Monster Rule: subject pronouns do the eating, object pronouns get eaten. I ate the cookie vs. Mom gave the cookie to me. Have students substitute I/he/she vs. me/him/her and hear which sounds right.

Vocabulary
Object Pronoun: A pronoun used as the object of a verb or preposition.
Object: Receives the action of the verb or follows a preposition.
Common Mistakes
  • Using subject pronoun in object position: Give it to I instead of Give it to me
  • Mixing him and her when gender is not marked in the sentence
  • Using they instead of them in object position
Differentiation
SupportHighlight the preposition and remind students the answer comes after it.
ChallengeRewrite the sentence using the full noun the pronoun replaces.
Discussion Questions
  • Why does it sound wrong to say Give it to I?
  • How do you decide between him and her?
Extension Activities
  • Role-play a store: practice give it to me, pass it to her etc.
  • Circle object pronouns in a short passage from a leveled reader.
Parent Tip
