Teaching Notes

Before reading, ask students what they know about zoos and safaris — What animals would they most want to see? Why do zoos exist? These stories build vocabulary around habitats, conservation, and animal behaviour. After reading, encourage students to connect what the character learned to something they have personally observed about animals.

Vocabulary
Safari: An expedition to observe or hunt animals.
Enclosure: An area surrounded by a barrier.
Habitat: The natural home of an animal.
Common Mistakes
  • Answering with a single word instead of a full sentence — remind students the instructions say full sentence
  • Confusing what the character observed with what the character felt — these are different questions
Differentiation
SupportRead the passage aloud together, pausing after each paragraph to ask one oral check question. Let students answer orally before writing.
ChallengeAsk students to write a second paragraph continuing the story — what does the character do the next day at the zoo or on the safari?
Discussion Questions
  • Why do you think animals behave differently in zoos than in the wild?
  • If you were a zookeeper, which animal would you most want to care for and why?
  • What is one thing the main character learned that surprised you?
