Quick Tip
An adverb describes a verb — it tells you how an action is done. TIP Many end in -ly, but not all — fast, well, hard are adverbs too.
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes
Introduce adverbs as "verb helpers." Ask students to act out the verb before and after adding the adverb — "Walk. Now walk slowly." The physical change makes the concept tangible.
Vocabulary
Adverb: A word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Verb: An action word.
Common Mistakes
- Circling the verb instead of the adverb
- Missing non-ly adverbs like "fast" or "hard"
- Confusing adjectives with adverbs in short sentences
Differentiation
SupportProvide a word bank of adverbs on the board. Have students match before circling.
ChallengeAsk students to replace the circled adverb with a new one and read the new sentence aloud.
Discussion Questions
- How does the sentence change when you remove the adverb?
- Can you think of three adverbs that describe "run"?
- Why do many adverbs end in -ly?
Extension Activities
- Adverb charades: act out a verb+adverb pair (e.g., "run slowly") for classmates to guess.
- Write 3 sentences with adverbs about what you did after school.
Parent Tip
Ask your child to describe how they do an action, like 'walk slowly'.
