Quick Tip
Read the clue, think of the whole word, and add the chunk that completes the spelling frame. Then write the complete sentence, not just the missing word.
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes

Show students that some common chunks can be recognized as a unit instead of read one letter at a time.

Vocabulary
trigraph: Three letters that make one sound.
chunk: A group of letters that makes a sound.
Common Mistakes
  • Adding the wrong chunk because the student guessed from the picture or first sound only
  • Spelling the whole word incorrectly after identifying the chunk
Differentiation
SupportModel the target pattern orally first, then have students tap sounds or syllables before reading or writing.
ChallengeAsk students to say the full word, isolate the target chunk, and explain why it fits the pattern.
Discussion Questions
  • What part of the word gives you the biggest clue?
  • How do you know this word fits this pattern and not another one?
Extension Activities
  • Make a class chart of helpful chunks such as tch, dge, igh
Parent Tip

Have your child say words with trigraphs and clap the syllables.
