Teaching Notes

A comma splice is a common error even in adult writing. Three fixes: add FANBOYS after the comma, replace the comma with a semicolon, or make two sentences.

Vocabulary
Comma splice: Joining two complete sentences with only a comma.
Independent clause: A group of words that can stand alone as a complete sentence.
Common Mistakes
  • Removing the comma without adding anything else (creating a run-on)
  • Using "however" or "therefore" after the comma without a semicolon
Extension Activities
  • Find comma splices in books.
  • Rewrite sentences using semicolons.
  • Add conjunctions to join clauses correctly.
Parent Tip

Ask your child to join two short sentences with 'and', 'but', or 'so'.
