Quick Tip
good = adjective → describes a NOUN  ·  "That's a good idea."
well = adverb → describes a VERB  ·  "She draws well."
Exception: "feel good / feel well" — both work but mean different things!

Teaching Notes

The single best test: "Can I replace the word with an adjective like 'wonderful'?" If yes → good. "She sings wonderful" ✗ → use well. "That's a wonderful idea" ✓ → good is correct. Also worth noting: sports stars saying "I played good" is a prescriptive vs descriptive debate — acknowledge it briefly.

Vocabulary
Adverb: A word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Good vs. Well: Good is an adjective; well is usually an adverb.
Common Mistakes
  • "I did good on the test" — should be "I did well"
  • "She feels good" when meaning physical recovery — should be "she feels well"
  • "The food tastes well" — "taste" is a linking verb here, so "good" is correct
Differentiation
SupportTeach one rule only first: "After action verbs, use well." Practice that exclusively, then add the other rule.
ChallengeWrite 6 original sentences — 3 using "good" correctly, 3 using "well" correctly.
Discussion Questions
  • Why is "I did good" so common if it's technically incorrect?
  • How does meaning change between "She looks good" and "She looks well"?
Extension Activities
  • Listen for "good/well" errors on TV for one day. Tally them. Bring examples to class.
  • Read a published editorial. Find every use of "good" and "well" — are they all correct?
Parent Tip

Ask your child to say if something is 'good' or if someone does it 'well'.
