Teaching Notes

Before reading, activate background knowledge by asking students what they already know about the featured animal. After reading, use a graphic organizer (Main Idea box + 3-4 Supporting Details boxes) to map the passage together as a class. Key question to build the habit: Would this detail still make sense if the main idea were different?

Vocabulary

Main idea: What the text is mostly about.

Details: Facts or information that support the main idea.

Common Mistakes

• Choosing a specific detail as the main idea (the most common error — model explicitly)
• Choosing a too-broad statement because it sounds like a summary
• Assuming the first sentence of the passage is always the main idea

Differentiation

Discussion Questions

• How do you know when a detail supports the main idea vs. just being an interesting fact?
• Could this passage have a different main idea? What would need to change?
• Why did the author choose to write about this particular aspect of the animal?

Extension Activities

• Find a nonfiction book or article about the same animal and identify its main idea.
• Write your own 3-sentence paragraph about a different animal with one clear main idea and two supporting details.
• Create a main idea web poster: main idea in the center, supporting details on the branches.
