A complex sentence has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause introduced by a subordinating conjunction. The dependent clause cannot stand alone.

Common Mistakes
  • Calling any long sentence "complex"
  • Confusing a relative clause (who, which, that) with a subordinating conjunction
