Teaching Notes
Tell students to ask themselves: Where? When? How? What kind? Adding the answer to any of these questions adds detail without changing the core meaning.
Vocabulary
Detail: A specific piece of information.
Vivid: Producing strong images or feelings.
Common Mistakes
- Adding a detail that changes the meaning (e.g. adding "not")
- Over-loading the sentence so that it becomes a run-on
Extension Activities
- Add details to a simple drawing.
- Describe a favorite food with details.
- Rewrite sentences about weather with details.
Parent Tip
Ask your child to describe everyday objects with more descriptive words.
