Teaching Notes

Superhero stories are excellent vehicles for discussing themes: responsibility, fairness, courage, and the consequences of power. Before reading, ask: What makes someone a real hero? After reading, push beyond plot recall — the best comprehension questions here are the theme questions. Encourage students to connect the hero's choices to real situations they have faced.

Vocabulary

Superhero: A character with special powers who fights for good.

Villain: A bad character who opposes the hero.

Power: A special ability a superhero has.

Common Mistakes

• Describing the hero's powers instead of the hero's character — the story is about choices, not abilities
• For theme questions, retelling the plot rather than naming what lesson or idea the story teaches

Discussion Questions

• Does a superhero need special powers to be a hero? Use the story to support your answer.
• What was the hardest decision the hero made, and do you agree with it?
• If you had one superpower from the story, which would you choose and why?

Extension Activities

• Design a superhero — draw them and write 3 rules they follow
• Compare the hero in this story to a real-world hero you admire
• Write a thank-you letter to the hero from one of the characters they helped
