Superhero stories are excellent vehicles for discussing themes: responsibility, fairness, courage, and the consequences of power. Before reading, ask: What makes someone a real hero? After reading, push beyond plot recall β€” the best comprehension questions here are the theme questions. Encourage students to connect the hero's choices to real situations they have faced.

Vocabulary
Superhero: A character with special powers who fights for good.
Villain: A bad character who opposes the hero.
Power: A special ability a superhero has.
Common Mistakes
  • Describing the hero's powers instead of the hero's character β€” the story is about choices, not abilities
  • For theme questions, retelling the plot rather than naming what lesson or idea the story teaches
Differentiation
SupportAfter reading, ask students to identify just one thing the hero did that was brave or kind before tackling the written questions.
ChallengeWrite a scene where a normal person without powers faces the same problem as the superhero. How do they solve it?
Discussion Questions
  • Does a superhero need special powers to be a hero? Use the story to support your answer.
  • What was the hardest decision the hero made, and do you agree with it?
  • If you had one superpower from the story, which would you choose and why?
Extension Activities
  • Design a superhero β€” draw them and write 3 rules they follow
  • Compare the hero in this story to a real-world hero you admire
  • Write a thank-you letter to the hero from one of the characters they helped
Parent Tip

Ask your child about their favorite superhero's powers.
