Grade 5/Adverbs
Relative Adverbs: Where, When, and Why (1382)
Where do whales live? When did that happen? Why does ice float? The words where, when, and why do more than ask questions — they connect clauses. This printable worksheet for Grades 4–5 teaches students to choose the correct relative adverb with full understanding of why each one works.

Teaching Notes
Teach the "antecedent test": find the noun the clause describes, classify it as place/time/reason, then pick the matching relative adverb. This systematic approach eliminates guessing.
Vocabulary
Relative Adverb: Connects a dependent clause to an independent clause.
Clause: A group of words with a subject and a verb.
Common Mistakes
- Using "where" for reason clauses ("the reason where..." — should be "why")
- Confusing "when" and "where" in questions about holidays (holidays are times, not places)
- Treating relative adverbs as interrogative adverbs and expecting a question meaning
Differentiation
SupportUnderline the antecedent noun and label it P/T/R (place/time/reason) before choosing.
ChallengeWrite 3 original sentences using each relative adverb.
Discussion Questions
- What's the difference between "where" as a question word and "where" as a relative adverb?
- Can you rewrite a "why" sentence using "because" instead? What changes?
Extension Activities
- Find 3 relative adverb sentences in a news article. Identify the antecedent in each.
- Write a travel blog paragraph using all three relative adverbs at least once.
Parent Tip
Ask your child to explain 'where,' 'when,' or 'why' something happened.
