Equal Groups to Multiplication

Build equal groups, connect them to repeated addition, and explain what a multiplication sentence means.
Session 1
Make equal groups
Draw three circles with four dots in each. Count the groups and the dots in one group. Write 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 and 3 × 4 = 12. Explain that this picture shows three groups of four. This worked example matches the idea at the top of the worksheet.

Connect two groups
Complete questions 1–6. Work in pairs: add the repeated numbers, then write the matching multiplication. Make a drawing for one pair and explain the number of groups and the amount in each. Check after attempting the questions.

Complete questions 7–10. Count how many times the repeated number appears before writing the multiplication. Draw the groups or use counters if you lose track. Explain why the number of groups is not the same as the total.

Complete questions 11 and 12. Compare this picture of five groups of three with question 7’s six groups of three. Explain how one more group changes the total. Use the key to check after giving your explanation.

Create a group story
On scrap paper, draw four equal groups of two. Make a short story for your picture and write both repeated addition and multiplication. An adult checks that you have 8 altogether and that your two equations match your picture. Then try your own equal-group picture.
For the adult
Use worksheet 28211, Multiplication as Repeated Addition. Print one student copy and keep the key separate. Use counters or circle-and-dot drawings. This plan introduces the meaning of multiplication; the child should be able to count reliably and add small numbers, but need not recall multiplication facts quickly. The worksheet uses number of groups × amount in each group. Different classroom conventions may reverse the factors; ask what each number represents. A reversed multiplication can have the same total but must still match the child’s explanation or drawing. Check that groups are equal, and distinguish number of groups from total objects. Support counting when needed and record how the answer was found, not just whether it matched.
