Read the Clock: Hours and Half Hours

  • 5 sessions
  • About 10 minutes each

Recognise the clock hands, read whole hours, then explore what changes at half past.

  1. Session 1

    Meet the hands

Open Reading Clocks: Full Hours. Look at question 1 together. Find the shorter hour hand and the longer minute hand. The minute hand is at 12 and the hour hand is at 3, so write 3:00 and say “three o’clock.” Try questions 2 and 3 together.

  2. Session 2

    Read whole hours

Complete questions 4–9 on the same full-hours sheet. For each clock, point to the minute hand first, then name the hour. Check the answer key after trying. Explain one clock without looking at your written answer.

  3. Session 3

    Meet half past

Open the half-hour worksheet. Compare questions 1 and 2: 1:00 and 1:30. At 1:30, the long minute hand points to 6 and the short hour hand has moved halfway from 1 towards 2. Write both times. Use a movable clock to show the change if available.

  4. Session 4

    Sort and read

On the same sheet, complete questions 3–9. Before writing each time, decide whether its minute hand is at 12 or 6. For half past, name the hour the short hand has already passed. Questions 5 and 9 need this check. Compare answers with the key.

  5. Session 5

    Explain the difference

Cover your answers and revisit questions 1, 2, 5, and 9 on the half-hour sheet. Explain how both hands help you read each time. Then use a teaching clock, or draw a large clock, to show 4:00 and 4:30. Ask an adult to check: at 4:30 the short hand belongs between 4 and 5.

For the adult

Use Reading Clocks: Full Hours (1850) and Analog Clocks: Half Hour Times (1857). Print each student sheet once. Each answer key has two pages. A movable teaching clock is helpful but optional; use the printed clock pictures if you do not have one. The second worksheet mixes whole hours and half hours; only questions 2, 5, and 9 show half past. At half past, the short hand is between hour numbers, not pointing exactly at the previous hour. Check that the child uses hand length as well as position, especially when both hands are close together. If whole hours are still confusing, repeat those with help before introducing half hours. Activities may be combined or repeated. Record what the child explained and any help needed; this is practice, not a mastery test.

Reread and check

  • I can identify the short hour hand and long minute hand.
  • I know a minute hand at 12 means :00.
  • I know a minute hand at 6 means :30.
  • At half past, I name the hour the short hand has already passed.
