Subtract with Tens and Ones

Use drawings to understand subtraction, practise short sets, and check answers with addition. No regrouping.
Session 1
Show taking away
On scrap paper, draw 3 tens and 6 ones for 36. Cross out 1 ten and 2 ones to take away 12. Count the remaining 2 tens and 4 ones, then write 36 − 12 = 24. Explain why the 1 in 12 means one ten.

Try four together
Complete questions 1–4 on the subtraction worksheet. Subtract the ones and then the tens. For question 4, show why subtracting all the ones leaves a zero in the ones place. Explain one answer before checking the key together.

Check with addition
Complete questions 5–8 on the same worksheet. To check question 5, add the answer you found to the number taken away. The total should be the starting number. The adult can model this check if it is new. Review the other answers with the key.

Explain a new problem
On scrap paper, solve 57 − 23. Show it with tens-and-ones marks and check by adding your answer to 23. Explain both steps to an adult. The adult checks that the difference is 34. Compare this explanation with your first drawing.
For the adult
Use worksheet 28201, Subtract Two-Digit Numbers: No Regrouping. Print one student copy and keep the answer key separate. The child should identify tens and ones and subtract within ten. Draw tens sticks and ones dots whenever the column method feels abstract. There is no timed work. If the child needs help, model one example and let them try another with a drawing. The addition check is introduced as an explanation, not a separate requirement before starting. These selected questions need no exchanging of a ten for ones. Keep notes about independent answers, prompts, and corrections rather than treating completion as proof of mastery.
For the adult
