Teaching Notes

Introduce skip counting by 20s by relating it to counting by 2s and adding a zero, or by thinking of two groups of 10. Use a number line or 100-chart (extended to 200/300) to highlight the patterns. Emphasize that numbers end in 0, and the tens digit increases by 2 each time.

Vocabulary
Skip counting: Counting by a given number.
Sequence: Numbers in a specific order.
Common Mistakes
  • Forgetting to add the zero (e.g., 2, 4, 6 instead of 20, 40, 60)
  • Confusing with skip counting by 10s or 5s
  • Losing track of the pattern, especially when numbers exceed 100
Differentiation
SupportProvide a partially filled number chart with more numbers given. Use concrete manipulatives in groups of 20. Connect directly to counting by 2s and writing a zero at the end.
ChallengeChallenge students to count backward by 20s from a higher number. Ask them to predict the next 3 numbers without a chart, or to explain the pattern for counting by 20s, 200s, etc.
Discussion Questions
  • What pattern do you see when you skip count by 20s?
  • How is skip counting by 20s similar to skip counting by 2s or 10s?
  • When might you use skip counting by 20s in real life?
Extension Activities
  • Count by 20s using a number line.
  • Draw groups of 20.
  • Sing skip counting songs.
Parent Tip

Have your child count groups of 20 small objects, like blocks.
