Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes
Emphasize aligning numbers by place value (ones under ones, tens under tens). Begin by adding the ones column, then move to the tens column. Introduce regrouping when the sum of the ones column is 10 or more.
Vocabulary
Column: Numbers arranged vertically.
Ones place: The rightmost digit in a number.
Tens place: The digit to the left of the ones place.
Common Mistakes
- Misaligning digits by place value (e.g., placing the 1-digit number under the tens place of the 2-digit number).
- Forgetting to regroup when the sum of the ones column is 10 or greater.
- Basic addition errors within each column.
Differentiation
SupportUse base ten blocks or drawings to model the addition. Start with problems that do not require regrouping. Provide a place value chart to guide alignment.
ChallengeIntroduce problems with regrouping. Challenge students to explain their steps or create their own addition problems. Introduce adding three 2-digit numbers.
Discussion Questions
- Why is it important to line up the numbers by their place value when we add in columns?
- What happens if the numbers in the ones column add up to 10 or more? What do we do?
- How is adding in columns similar to or different from adding numbers mentally?
Extension Activities
- Add 3-digit and 1-digit.
- Add 2-digit and 2-digit.
- Practice subtraction.
Parent Tip
Use small objects to represent tens and ones for addition practice.
