Quick Tip
When the bottom numbers are the same, just subtract the top numbers! Keep the bottom number the same. Example: 3/4 - 1/4 → Subtract tops: 3 - 1 = 2, keep bottom: 4 → Answer: 2/4
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes

Parallel to addition (610). Same rule: operate on numerators, keep denominator. 3/4 - 1/4 means '3 fourths take away 1 fourth = 2 fourths left.' Visual models show removing shaded sections. Some students find subtraction harder than addition generally, so expect more support needed. Reinforce: denominator never changes!

Vocabulary
Numerator: The top number in a fraction.
Denominator: The bottom number in a fraction.
Common Mistakes
  • Subtracting both numerators AND denominators
  • Subtracting in wrong order (smaller from larger instead of following equation)
  • Calculation errors in subtraction
  • Changing the denominator
  • Not understanding that result might be 0 (3/3 - 3/3 = 0/3 = 0)
  • Subtracting denominators
  • Forgetting to keep denominator
  • Not simplifying results
  • Incorrectly modeling fractions
Differentiation
SupportUse fraction manipulatives: start with amount, physically remove parts. Emphasize: 'Subtract tops, keep bottom.' Provide subtraction facts if needed. Complete only 6 problems. Show subtraction using crossing out in visual models.
ChallengeWord problems: 'Had 5/6 pizza, ate 2/6, how much left?' Challenge: When does answer equal 0? Create subtraction problems where answer is specific fraction. Connect to real measurements.
Discussion Questions
  • How is fraction subtraction like regular subtraction?
  • How is it different?
  • Can you get a negative answer with fractions? Why or why not?
  • When might you subtract fractions in real life?
  • Why do we keep the denominator the same?
  • When might you use fraction subtraction?
  • How is this similar to subtracting whole numbers?
  • Can we subtract fractions with different denominators?
Extension Activities
  • Story problems involving 'taking away' fractions
  • Real-world: Measuring cups - start with 3/4 cup, use 1/4 cup
  • Compare to addition: What happens if you add then subtract same fraction?
  • Pattern exploration: Subtract same amount from different starting fractions
Parent Tip

Ask your child to divide a treat into equal parts and take some away.
