This worksheet pairs perfectly with physical Base 10 manipulatives. Have students build the number shown before writing it. For struggling students, encourage them to touch each rod and count by tens out loud before adding the ones. Connect to real-life: dimes (tens) and pennies (ones) reinforce the same concept.

Common Mistakes
  • Counting each segment of a rod as 1 instead of the whole rod as 10
  • Forgetting to count the ones after counting the tens
  • Writing the ones digit first (e.g. writing 32 instead of 23)
  • Losing count when there are many units — use the illustration's 5-per-row grouping
Differentiation
SupportProvide physical Base 10 blocks to match the worksheet pictures. Let students count by ones on the rods (point to each segment) until they build confidence counting by 10s.
