Add every whole number from 1 to 100 and the answer is 5,050. A 10-year-old named Carl Friedrich Gauss reportedly figured this out in seconds while the rest of his class was still counting. His trick: pair numbers from opposite ends — 1+99, 2+98, 3+97... each pair adds to 100, there are 50 pairs, plus 50 left in the middle. 50×100 + 50 = 5,050. The pattern works for any sequence. 🧠

Take any 3-digit number where the first digit is larger than the last (try 853). Reverse it (358). Subtract the smaller from the larger (853 − 358 = 495). Reverse that result (594). Now add them: 495 + 594 = 1089. Try any number that qualifies. It always ends in 1089. No exceptions. This is called the 1089 trick and it works entirely because of how place value and subtraction interact. 🔢

In a room of just 23 people, there's a better than 50% chance two of them share a birthday. With 30 people it's 70%. Most people guess far lower — maybe 10%. In Kindergarten, addition means combining groups — first physically, then with pictures, then with written number sentences.
