😂 The Only Order of Operations Joke You Need
Surgeon: "Nurse, I have so many patients. Who do I work on first?"
Nurse: "Simple. Follow the order of operations."
I read this to my class on the first day of PEMDAS. One student raised his hand: "Wait — are math and surgery the same thing?"
"Only when you do them in the wrong order," I said. 😄
The stakes aren't quite that high. But your answer IS wrong if you skip the order — which feels close enough when it's your grade on the line.
How to Use These in Your Classroom 🏫
☀️ Fraction diagnostic in week one. Don't teach new content yet. Find out who has fraction fluency and who doesn't. Give the Easy fraction worksheet cold. Error patterns tell you exactly who needs pre-teaching before you hit ratios — and you need to know that now, not six weeks in.

What should 6th graders know by end of year? Fluent fraction operations (all four), reliable order of operations, basic ratio and proportional reasoning, area and perimeter for common shapes, and volume for rectangular prisms. These are the prerequisites for 7th grade pre-algebra — and middle school doesn't reteach them.
My students know PEMDAS but still get wrong answers. Why? Knowing the acronym and applying it consistently are different skills. The most common error: left-to-right addition before checking for multiplication. Build the habit of "scan first, then solve" — spot all the multiplications before touching a single addition.
